We have been doing a lot of repairs or have required contractors to perform some work for us be it plumbing, electrical, concrete or HVAC. Outside of plumbing, everything else has been very difficult to find good help. Concrete was the worst. We called six contractors and 3 showed up. 1 took a week longer to get us a quote and one was extremely expensive. The others that I talked to who didn’t even show up said they were weeks out. We did eventually find a reliable and affordable concrete guy through a referral, so it did eventually work out.
For anyone reading this blog wondering which path to take career wise, I would take a hard look (no pun intended) into the concrete biz. Apparently everyone in the concrete business is really busy, and if you are skilled you can make some really good money. Factoring in the concrete the labor cost is still very high.
Outside of concrete it seems electricians make very good money and are also in high demand, as they seem in no hurry to take new work or work full days. Plumbers make really good money too, but all 3 that we called showed up, so I am wondering if this may be a field to avoid, as they seem pretty eager for work.
The takeaway from our experience on this is you can make awesome money if you are willing to work hard and specialize in a trade.
